“This story is not and never was meant to challenge anyone's faith; however, if one's faith can be shaken by stories in a humorous novel, one may have a bit more praying to do.”
― Christopher Moore, Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal

Funny Novels
Ten years ago Mr. Sophy and I were on vacation, tent camping in Zion National Park. We had no electricity, which meant no television, so our evenings were spent sitting around a campfire talking, playing cards, or reading with our headlamps or an "itty bitty book lights." On that particular trip I was reading a book recommended and loaned to me by a friend - Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal by Christopher Moore.
Now I read a lot of books - mostly novels of many types. If it has a good plot and is well written, I'll read it, whatever the genre for the most part Of course I love comedy, but I rarely find a novel which makes me quite literally "LOL" - but this book made me do that - laugh out loud - over and over and over again. So much so that not only did I have tears running down my face and could barely speak, but I also laughed so hard and so often, Mr. Sophy ended up reading it for himself, using my laughter as a recommendation. It is my favorite comedy novel of all time.
From the Amazon.com review:
While the Bible may be the word of God, transcribed by divinely inspired men, it does not provide a full (or even partial) account of the life of Jesus Christ. Lucky for us that Christopher Moore presents a funny, lighthearted satire of the life of Christ--from his childhood days up to his crucifixion--in Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal. This clever novel is surely blasphemy to some, but to others it's a coming-of-age story of the highest order.
(Warning: This book is for adults - consider it rated "R" if it were a movie. Also, it is considered sacrilegious by "some" people - and by "some" people I mean those without a sense of humor.)
Here's one small sample - Josh is Joshua, aka Jesus in the book. (Joshua is Jesus in Aramaic, the language of Jesus.) Biff is the narrator and Josh's' best friend.
“I've got to think that that was unethical," Joshua said.
"Josh, faking demonic possession is like a mustard seed."
"How is it like a mustard seed?"
"You don't know, do you? Doesn't seem at all like a mustard seed, does it? Now you see how we all feel when you liken things unto a mustard seed? Huh?”
I've read a few other of Moore's books - Fluke and The Stupidest Angel. I enjoyed them, but not as much as Lamb. Other books that have made me laugh out loud for real? I chortled reading some Tom Robbins novels - Skinny Legs and All was my first of his. And of course every top 10 list includes Douglas Adams' The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. I would also have to add M*A*S*H by Richard Hooker to any list.
What books would you add to any top 10 list of the funniest novels of all time? I'm not talking about the essays of David Sedaris or Erma Bombeck put into a book. I'm talking fiction - novels. What are some of your favorite FUNNY novels, and why? What makes them funny? What kind of written humor really tickles your funny bone? Write in and tell me, and I'll include your comments next month.
Until next time, Sophy
