Cheating

I played a game with family this weekend weekend. It was called "Nerf Wars," and it was basically capture the flag. I say "played" but I really only played one round. It was mainly for the kids. Honestly, I don't know how they do it. Where do they get the energy? It was 80+ degrees (admittedly slightly cooler than recent days) but pretty humid.

We were going to play one more round, so I grabbed a green band (it was green vs orange), but someone suggested, "Kids versus adults!" Now, the odds were stacked against us to begin with. There were almost 20 kids versus about 7 adults. *Laugh* Plus, kids have all that energy they get from somewhere...

The secret weapon, though, seemed to be cheating. Kids cheat! (This may not be a revelation to some of you, but I don't have kids nor do I spend a lot of time around them, so I didn't know.) The rule was that if you got hit with a Nerf dart, you had to return to your home base and try again. The seven of us adults were guarding our flag, ruthlessly hammering the kid with darts, and they wouldn't return! They just kept coming and stole our flag, declaring their win.

But they're kids, so I guess it's okay... *Rolleyes* *Laugh*

Now, the same can't be said about Writing.Com, right? None of us would ever dream of cheating, right? Sadly, I'm sure it happens from time to time. What can we do about it? Well, if you see someone cheating, you can try approaching them first. It's hard to admit being the tattle-tale type, but I'd probably be prone to pointing it out to a contest/activity host. I'm a stickler for rules.

As a host, what would you do if you found someone cheating? Disqualification, I'm sure. Reporting them to a Moderator? Possibly. If what they're doing verges on abuse of WDC or another member, it could be a good idea to ask a Moderator.

Cheating feels cheap to me. It didn't feel like those kids "actually" won to me, and I'm not sure how they could feel like they really won. What did I do in Nerf Wars? Well, in the next round, I ran and captured their flag and even though one of the kids hit me with his foam sword (Really? Swords? No one told me there were swords!), I ignored it and returned to our base with their flag, declaring a win*. *Pthb*

*This isn't appropriate behavior in an actual contest. Just because someone else cheats, doesn't mean everyone can. Obviously. *Laugh* But when you're playing with kids, it seems like sometimes all rules are off.
