It's That Time!
It's almost that time of year! What, you say? Oh, not Christmas, although that IS eighty some days away, I was talking about NaNoWriMo season. Now we all know that those trying to write a novel in the month of November will soon be starting to prep for the big gig. They'll be making outlines, character sketches and scene templates. But what about everyone not trying to write a novel?
Those NonNaNoWriMo'ers should be busy checking out all the contests running this month and next. While I'm not downplaying the monumental effort of those novelists...I'm merely suggesting that those not participating take advantage of the lack of competition in site and member contests. Is there a contest you often enter but always place second? One you might be afraid to give a try? This is the time! Strike while the keyboard is hot!
So get out there, cherry pick some favorite contests or dig hard and try the site contests. Some effort and fantastic editing could get you a big prize. And while you're at it, spend a little time thinking about topics for upcoming seasonal stories. A few character ideas or plot lines you could twist around a prompt is always nice to have in your back pocket. And as always, Write On!
This month's question: Do you have your eye on some Oct/Nov contests? Which ones? Send in your answer below! Editors love feedback! |
Excerpt: Can you write a truly terrifying tale? Do you have a knack for frightening fiction? Are your stories... sinister? If so, you've come to the right place! Formerly known as the Necronomicon Contest, Sinister Stories is a monthly prompt-based short fiction contest hosted by "The Dark Society" . The contest is open to all Writing.Com members, so if you think you're sick and twisted enough to take home the prize, then just follow the instructions below and prepare for judgment!
Excerpt: I accept old or new Horror Flash Fiction. No prompt this Autumn.
Excerpt: Come on in and enter your funny poem! Write about a humorous situation and exaggerate. Try a rhyming poem, a Limerick, Lyrics, or even pen something absurd.

Excerpt: Every time I get hung up on outlining or writing my novel, I find myself remembering one of my best friends in high school. After shared extracurricular activities or while camped out in each other's bedroom for a sleepover, I'd present a snarl in one of my stories and she and I would toss ideas back and forth.
Excerpt: Our mission is to review on a weekly basis. We encourage reviews for all case colors. We ask that all reviews be honest, yet tasteful, please. Point out tips that will be helpful, and also the positive things found in the item if there are any. You can be honest in a tasteful way.
Excerpt: We are firm believers that far too many writers dwell so much on the grammatical portion of their writing, they stop the creative juices from spilling out of their fingers. A good writer does not stop to correct mistakes along the way. A good writer WRITES until they have extracted every bit of juice from their creative selves. Only then, does a good writer stop to edit.
Excerpt: RAOK was originally created1 as a "Random Acts of Kindness" way to grant lucky Writing.Com members with an Upgraded membership. Over the years, RAOK has gifted over a thousand Upgraded memberships to our authors and we plan on doing so for many years to come!
RAOK gifts Upgraded memberships and does not give Basic or Premium upgrades. This enables us to give out more individual two-month upgrades and thus help as many Writing.Com authors as we can. In addition, upgrades are only given to primary accounts, not authorized secondary accounts.
Excerpt: On Monday, post your goals for the week and I'll send you 1,000 Gift Points. Come back on Friday, post your updates on your goals, and I'll send you an additional 1,000 Gift Points!
Excerpt: Your story must contain a setting, at least one (1) character, a conflict and a resolution. / Here's the hard part - your story must be 300 words or fewer.
