Madeleine L’Engle

A smile starts on the lips, a grin spreads to the eyes, a chuckle comes from the belly; but a good laugh bursts forth from the soul, overflows, and bubbles all around.

Letter from the editor

I cannot tell a joke! I can write a funny story, as long as it is flash fiction. I can write a funny poem. I cannot tell a joke properly. I hear the joke, and I laugh. When I go to retell the joke, it does not come out of my mouth the way I heard or read it. The only explanation I can come up with, is that it loses something in the translation. Somewhere between reading or hearing the joke, part of it gets lost while it is wandering through my mind.

Somewhere, in the deep recesses of my subconscious mind are punch lines looking for their lost jokes. Punch lines, I forgot when I told the joke, that now wander aimlessly through the canyons, valleys, and forest of my mind looking for their lost questions or tensions that leads up to them. This scenario explains why, on occasion, the punch lines pop into my conscious mind without a build up or question.

I suppose, I could write the entire joke down when I hear or read it, but reading a joke from a piece of paper does not have the same effect on people that telling it from memory does. Telling a joke, without the proper punch line elicits stars that ask "What planet are you from?" Remembering the punch line hours or days later, does not do any good because the people I originally told the joke to are not present.

l do not know how to solve this dilemma, short of downloading a teleprompter app to my smartphone. Are there teleprompter apps? If these type of apps do not exist, they should. I am sure I am not the only person on Earth that cannot tell a joke. At least, with a teleprompter app I could glance at it without raising eyebrows. Everyone is always glancing at the smartphones, for one reason or another, while engaged in conversations.
