She allows herself to get hurt by loving, trusting, forgiving. Why? |
She's a strange one, that girl. She loves to the point where her heart bursts out of her chest, even for people that she hardly knows. She trusts much too much and has scars to prove it. She can barely sing a song or read a poem without breaking down, crying from its' beauty and its' ability to move her soul. He had to know why. So, naturally, as humans do, he asked her. She looked up at him, her eyes a deep blue from crying after her recent scar that she earned from a man who told her he loved her, only to leave her. "Why?" she repeated, her mouth forming the foreign word over and over again. He hesitated slightly and moved back, giving her a bit of room. "Um... yes... why do you let yourself get hurt so much? I mean, you know not to trust certain people or anything, yet you keep doing it. Why keep doing it?" She shook her head, a strange smile starting to move across her face. "You don't get it, do you?" she asked. He suddenly felt awkward, trapped. She raised her eyes, filled with pain but still brimming with that innocent love. "Do you trust and love everyone you meet?" He shook his head. That was foolish, childish even. Why should he love anyone that would not love him back? "I was once like you," she continued. "I tried to steel my heart to everyone. It hurt. Not just others. It physically hurt me. So, I stopped." "But what about this?" he asked, motioning to her tears that started anew as she spoke. "Doesn't that hurt too? Why do you let passion run your life? Why not get control over yourself?" She shook her head again, as though she knew a secret he did not. "When you steel your heart against your emotions, you let yourself die inside. In order to live, to truly live, you need to allow them to flow. Sure, I have loved and have been hurt, I have trusted and been stabbed and I cry much too much. But I have learned that if you keep loving, you will find someone that loves you just as much. If you keep trusting, then you will gain trust. And if you let your emotions flow, others will be moved." Still, looking into her eyes, he was not convinced. "But how can you keep allowing the people that hurt you back into your life? Don't you learn that if you let them back in, they're just going to hurt you again?" "I have learned forgiveness, both receiving it and giving it. That is one of the more beautiful things of the human spirit." She looked down at the tears splashing on the floor and gave a small smile. "You know, they look beautiful, like fallen diamonds." He sat down next to her and watched the tears capture the light, creating small rainbows. Softly, he put his arm around her and wiped away her tears, letting her feel her pain and her immeasurable joy. |
