The Jennings were English and thought they had a big inheritance coming. After Queen Victoria announced that the only living heirs to the Jennings estate were in America, every Jennings family apparently paid out money to shysters to go to England to settle for them, none of them ever hearing from the so-called lawyers again. This family paid out money as well.

REV POINDEXTER PATTESON SMITH SR

(commonly referred to as P P Smith)

B 08-14-1793 Buckingham, VA

D 11-13-1845 Cumberland Co, VA

Buried Fork Union Baptist Church, Fluvanna Co, VA

Religion ' Baptist, minister

Occupations-farmer (tobacco, produce) & itinerant minister

Nickname ' Uncle Decker to family

Cause of death- severe long term diarrhea

Spouse ' Martha Jane Berryman Smith

Parents ' George Lumpkin Smith and Elizabeth Harris Smith

Children ' 6

Siblings ' 6 brothers, no sisters

Military: at age 19 or 20, joined army under General Jackson; fought Indians at Talladega  & Tallahachia. May have fought in war against British (1812?).

Notes: Unnamed nephew close to him taught school in Richmond, Va.

Active in General Association of Baptists. * Habit to rise 4 AM for Bible study before work.

*baptized 2050 people *preached between five and six thousand times. *Noted that early 1800's

saw poor crops and tobacco quality was 'sorry'. Paid little per bale.  *dreamed of day when

churches could support pastors so they could be free to visit all parishioners and pray with them,

but still feed their own families.

            * would visit church members in the fields as they worked, after his chores were done *wanted

to be remembered for leading others to Heaven

Politics: anti-whigs. Wrote of trusting legislation to give aid in 'hard times, scarce money', with bill collectors being so hard on debtors.

Finances: owned land in Tennessee and Virginia and 5 slaves, no cash on hand

Wife did not approve of preaching, begging him not to go on long journeys. He traveled weekly by horseback up to 80 miles to preach with little or no pay. Once she hid his clothes to keep him at home. He remained concerned for her welfare during his lifetime and after his death. He referred to her as 'my own dear Martha'. She finally resigned herself to his ministry, and after his death, married another preacher.

Death Bed: He quoted Scripture, and saw visions of angels ascending and descending. He sent for his brother Robert (they were very close), but he didn't make it in time. There were witnesses to his pain, and he was conscious. He told friends, family, and parishioners that it was over, and he died quietly.

Note: He kept a diary which was quoted in a biography, now out of print. My great-aunt Ruth had the only copy I know of, and it was dog-eared.

D  bef OCT 1620 England

Sp ' Thomas Jolye

Parents ' Thomas Langley, Joan Browser

Ch: Mary, Elizabeth, Anna

Note: Joan signed her will on Aug. 1620. To each daughter, she left 100Eng pounds to be given at age 21, and Power of Attorney to Elizabeth Hollis with instructions to educate her unmarried daughters, and 80 pounds as 'procion' from her father.  I do not know where Hollis name comes from, or why she received something extra from father who died one year earlier. It leads to several questions, like was Eliz from a previous marriage, had Eliz married someone else before Lowe? Or were there two Elizabeth Jolye's?

If you can believe everything that is available on the internet, this family can be traced back to two Scottish Kings and one English king, all around 1000 years ago. Macbeth of Shakespear fame was a cousin of the family! The time alone leaves reason to question findings. There is Danish, Viking, maybe Irish blood even further back. Info being processed.
