I enjoy watching the squirrels race along on my back fence trying to outsmart the dog.
Antics in my Backyard

The sun is peeking over the back fence rail
in a blue sky it casts brightly colored trails

Blades of grass are still beaded with the morning dew
Holding spider webs that glitter like diamonds anew

I look up to see a squirrel walking along the fence
His antics just don't seem to make sense

In his hurry he slips on top of the fence
Trying in vain to get a nibble of the food

Of which the dog hadn't yet chewed
Hanging there with his back foot slipping down the board

He hurriedly composes himself and goes for the reward
But just when he thought he had it made

Diddle Lee dog came screeching out of nowhere like a tirade
With a flip of his tail the squirrel gave a hasty serenade

Jumping to the nearest tree, making his retreat
To sit and watch for Diddle Lee to go back to sleep
