Lesson Three Write It Right Assignment
Write a sentence for each of the rules listed below. Write each sentence

below the instructions for that sentence. For the comma splice rule, you

will need to create TWO sentences. First, create a comma splice. Then, write

the correction of the comma splice. Do NOT use any sentence from the lesson.

Be creative and show your style!

1. Use a colon to introduce a list of items.
1. A good writer uses many techniques and tools: proper punctuation,

grammar, writing tools, and research for accurate information.
2. Use a colon to introduce a list of elements made up of several words.
2. You need to bring these items with you: wool blanket, blue slippers,

multi color scarf, and soft purple hat.
3. Write a sentence that uses both a colon and at least two semicolons.
3. Carefully follow these directions in this order: first, clean the
container; second, fill it with solution; and last, put on the lid.

4. Write a sentence that uses both a colon and at least three proper nouns.
4. I have three friends who have dogs: Johnna, Leslie, and Donna.

5. Write a sentence using a colon to introduce a short quotation. Use the
following if you like: "Famous Quotes"
5. Did you know that Harvey said these words: "It's good as gold"?

6. Write TWO sentences each for the following semicolon rules:
*Note* A semicolon can replace a period when two sentences are very closely

related.
6a. I like my service dog Bella: she is my best friend.
6b. Bella is my best friend and my service dog: she loves working for me.
*Note* A semicolon can be used to correct a comma splice, also known as a

run-on sentence.
(You will need to create the comma splice and then write the

correction.)
6c. Shopping for a coat for Bella, couldn't find anything, got frustrated,

and left.
6d. I went shopping for a coat for Bella: couldn't find anything, got

frustrated, and then left.
*Note* Use semicolons to separate elements of a series when one or more of

the elements contains commas.
6e. 3. Follow these directions very cafefully: first, clean the container;

second, fill it with solution; and third, put on the lid; and then shake it

until it is completely mixed.
