The progression of swing music on the planet Nideon--with links to Earth equivalents
1911 AM (After Magic): John Vukoja writes "Mellowdy" and creates a new genre of music, called under the same name. It sounds something like this:

1924 AM: A cult dance movement develops in Snickerry. The dances are associated with immodest clothing and sexual promiscuity and therefore frowned upon by any members of "good society." It looks something like this:

1940: Kylie Morgan, "The Saxophone Dancer," speeds Mellowdy up and rockets it to international fame. The new, faster, style gets nicknamed "smoke music," a reference both to the fact that the new music is "hotter," and that dances are often held in smoky, grungy locations where upstanding citizens don't venture. This is a further insult to citizens in equatorial Snickerry, who have religious feelings about food quality. Citizens of Zenxon are bothered not so much by this, as by the fact that the dance is picked up by the fleet-footed sprites, humans who had been permanently changed by wind magic. Though sprites and humans get along in Snickerry, racial relations remain rocky in Zenxon. It looks something like this:

1950: The dance gains popularity and respectability, though remains controversial on some fronts. Competitive teams develop. They look something like this:

1961: a new, integrated sprite-human band starts up in Zenxon. They call themselves Center of Gravity, and say they've rearranged the Mellowdy's "center of gravity" to get a new sound. That sound is a something like this:
