We can fill spaces with ghosts that are not there

You filled our home with imagined pain,
Gave life to ghosts your mind had fed.
You turned from love, from comfort once made plain,
And chose instead the voices in your head.

Their twisted faces scream in smoke and flame,
Distorted shadows dancing through your mind.
You cursed the walls and spat your family’s name,
Forgetting the love and joy you left behind.

The meals went cold; you would not taste or try,
While anxious faces waited at the door.
You listened to demons, no one else could spy,
As I wept and prayed once more.

But sometimes through the dark a light appears,
Those who love you are still waiting here.
