Logocentric (adj).Regarding words and language as a fundamental expression of an external reality (especially applied as a negative term to traditional Western thought by postmodernist critics).
Sometimes I just write whatever I feel like. Other times I respond to prompts, many taken from the following places:
My heart is still in Kansas. Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin might suit me fine. I really want to visit Kentucky. If I had six months to spare I could learn a lot in Utah or Alabama.
There are places in UK and Canada that may work for me. I don't mind having to speak another language. Portugal is my #1. I could live in Lillehammer, Norway or Göteborg, Sweden.
Further afield... I want to go back to: Nara, Japan; Novi Pazar, Serbia; Sofia, Bulgaria; Roi Et, Thailand; ChiaYi, Taiwan, Ciudad Quesada (San Carlos) and Turrialba, Costa Rica.
Places I haven't been: Senegal, Rwanda, Malawi, Kenya, Fiji, the Stans of Central Asia...
I can tolerate discomfort but would prefer a place where I don't have to fight for my right to exist (I've earned it). That's for younger people. I prefer diverse places where I'm just another odd duck to be cherished or ignored. I'd rather be somewhere without nobility and serfs. Inequity fosters instability. I want to be included and not shunned (for whatever reason). tolerance is a virtue imho.
Sounds hectic, but fun. The horseback riding was a hit, it seems. I'm glad you've been enjoying your time there. To me the food sounds exotic, and I'd probably eat burgers and fries along with the kiddos.
I've been to Brasilito and Playa Conchal. My review of Conchal? Lovely but noisy and dangerous due to jet skies. I went there by bus but didn't stay at the resort... as you noted: very expensive.
I don't ride horses but I know someone who lives in Manuel Antonio who loves riding her horse down the beach.
I have had roblado (sea bass?) and had ceviche. I usually stick to gallo pinto and casado in the highlands. The resorts cater to tourists.
Glad to read that you walked. I don't think I ever rode in a car in Guanacaste.
My schedule doesn't leave much room for library visit, but I have gone to community meetings in them (discussing road projects and what not). With living in a good sized metro area, the main library downtown has extensive magazine archives I've actually perused to try and track down a piece from The Economist. I couldn't find the article I remembered but found some otherwise worthwhile reads during my archive expedition.
Road trips do make for some great memories. I still point out the spot on westbound Interstate 70 just past the Bunker Hill Road exit where the V-belt on our Ford Windstar departed this life. Walking a mile back to the truck stop at the exit for assistance, I was told to pop the hood and keep it below 30 mph the 30 or so miles to Russell and a repair shop that could likely get us back on the road.
I did, they did, and the memory - as you can tell - is still there.
Oh, I'm quite familiar with the Goo Goo Dolls and Colbie Caillat. Did you know Brighter Than the Sun was co-written with OneRepublic's Ryan Tedder? Yeah, just had to drop my two cents
For the past several years, I've been content to do my "usuals" when it comes to running activities. The official contests every month, the "NaNoWriMo Write-A-Thon" every November, and a handful of annual one-offs for "The Soundtrackers Group" scattered about throughout the year. It's been a long time since I've run what I would consider a very active group or activity, like back in the day when I ran the "Unofficial Erotica Newsletter Group" , "The Dark Society" , and "The Screenwriting Group" , and participated in half a dozen other regular contests and activities.
While I can't say that I'm fully ready to commit to another majorly active group or anything right now, I am excited to start dusting off some old activities and ideas that I've been meaning to get around to for a while now. In particular, I'm really excited to have just launched "The Bradbury" in anticipation of starting that in the new year. I'm also finally going to relaunch "Blog Harbor" with a new format and some new prompts to give people more options for their writing next year.
My goal for 2025 is to be much more productive with my writing than I have been in the last several years, so I'm hoping that with enough outlets for writing that interests me, something will catch!
