"The Soundtrack of Your Life" | Day 16I almost went with one of Kygo's 80s remixes (his version of "Higher Love" with Whitney Houston and "What's Love Got To Do With It" with Tina Turner are both regularly on my playlists), and I actually started writing an entry about his collaboration with Sasha Sloan ("I'll Wait"). But this song has been speaking to me a lot lately and I really try not to do any repeats during "The Soundtrack of Your Life" . I can always appreciate a great voice paired with a savvy DJ/electronic music producer, and I think this song really capitalizes on the strength of both. |
"The Soundtrack of Your Life" | Day 15I still can't get over the fact that Taylor Swift dropped not one, but two unplanned albums in 2020. It's a really remarkable accomplishment, and while these two albums aren't necessary my favorites, there are a few songs on each of them that I think are really great and accentuate her talents as a songwriter. Even without a full studio production backing her, she writes affecting, catchy songs. This one is off her second album (evermore) and is probably my favorite from that album, although a few others like "willow" and "'tis the damn season" are good too. |
"The Soundtrack of Your Life" | Day 14I'm a sucker for a catchy song that causes a fun social media trend. This song reminds me a lot of "Gagnam Style" from PSY a few years ago where it just absolutely blew up and you could find people posting videos of themselves dancing to it absolutely everywhere. And who knows if it'll actually have any staying power or will fade away once the new trendy song pops up, but in the meantime this is a fun one to add to my playlists where I can just enjoy a song that makes me want to dance. Jason Derulo is a hugely underrated artist, in my opinion. He's a great dancer and has a number of, if not great, than at least really catchy, really well-produced songs. I've been listening to him since "In My Head" and "Ridin' Solo" off his debut album, and each successive album he releases usually has at least one or two songs that I listen to for a decent amount of time. |
"The Soundtrack of Your Life" | Day 13I could have honestly put any Maggie Rogers song from her Heard It In A Past Life album. All of the songs are great and it's honestly a serious contender for the album that I'm going to use for Musicology Anthology this year. Every song is soulful, but each one has a distinctly different sound and really compelling lyrics. She might be one of my favorite new artists that I've discovered in the past six months, and her entire album is featured on just about all of my current playlists. |
"The Soundtrack of Your Life" | Day 12VHS Collection is another of the artists (like A R I Z O N A and The Band CAMINO) that I recently discovered and had a hard time picking just one song to feature because I've been listening to a whole bunch of different songs by them and I like a whole bunch of them. I almost went with "Waiting on the Summer" or "Sign" but ultimately picked this one because it was the song that first introduced me to the band. I think it might've been from an episode of SHAMELESS. I really dig their retro sound; it's modern, but often feels like I'm listening to a song with 80s influences, which is the music I grew up listening to. |
"The Soundtrack of Your Life" | Day 11This is another of the uptempo, high-energy songs that I've been listening to a lot while I work. It's also sort of my anthem for dealing with bullshit at work, whenever someone is annoying me or making my life more difficult. There's something soothing about listening to a song asking why someone's always in a mood, screwing around, trying to play games. I have literally never heard of either 24KGoldn or iann dior prior to this song coming out. I couldn't tell you the name of any other song either one of them has done. But this one sure is catchy! |
"The Soundtrack of Your Life" | Day 10This is such a simple, beautiful song. Its uncomplicated lyrics and acoustic tune really make the artistry of the song stand out. I usually dislike acoustic songs and prefer the full production value that a studio can bring to a song, but it's songs like these that really make a strong case for the simplicity of some great lyrics and a catchy tune on a single instrument like a piano or a guitar. I actually found this song on the Feel the Beat movie on Netflix which was... not a great movie... but my son loves to watch it and after enough times, the musical number set to this song started to grow on me. It's been on my playlists ever since. |
"The Soundtrack of Your Life" | Day 9While we're on the topic of soulful white guys, I've been (re)listening to this song by Lewis Capaldi a lot. I'm not sure why sad love songs about relationships are making me think about my mom so often... I think it's just the snippets of lyrics and the overall tone and emotion that I'm really connecting with right now. I suppose most of the songs I'm identifying with are about loss in some way, just not so much death of a loved one as loss of a significant other. |
"The Soundtrack of Your Life" | Day 8This is such a soulful song, I often find myself listening to it when I'm feeling somber or nostalgic. It also reminds me a lot of my own experience with moving to Los Angeles for school and work and how hard this city (and the business I'm in) can be sometimes. Back in the pandemic before-times, this was the perfect song to listen to on my long commute home, especially driving through the middle of the city at night. |
"The Soundtrack of Your Life" | Day 7Since I decided to go with the original artist on the last blog entry when I was tempted to go with a cover version, I'm going to flip the script for this one and include a cover that I think is better than the original. The Tones And I version of this song is a little too juvenile sounding for my tastes (entirely possible it's because my kids have been listening to it nonstop  ), but I really like the acoustic version that (former X Factor contestant) Jennel Garcia does. It still has the same energy and excitement of the original, but feels a little more sophisticated.This is a song that I'll often have on in the background when I want to be productive and get some work done. There's a good energy to it, but it's also a pretty simple song and the lyrics and melody don't get in the way when I need to focus. It's a great productivity song. |
