This is a well thought out, beautifully written piece that is very touching, especially given it's scary/horror categorization. It reminds one that parents (authority figures in general) do not always have the capacity or the intentions to make selfless, beneficial decisions for their dependents. The author successfully portrays the confusion of a child, Gabriel, who is given conflicting commands from both parents, frustating him to the point of acting out aggresively. At the same time, Robby, the morally corrupt father who manipulates his children to avoid the scorn of his wife, serves as a role model for his seemingly maniacal son. The story, aptly titled, "Snow Angels," at first leads the reader to think they are enmeshed in a feel-good story about a happy family spending the holidays in a quaint, snow laden house, a family who might plop down in the fluffy snow outside to make snow angels together. However, the frozen body of the little girl, the bloody, lifeless father, and the chillingly stoic son, Gabriel (an angel's name), are the real snow angels. The themes are well connected, the characters believable and relatable, and the ending is surprising. Good job. Can't wait to read more like this!
