Poem of an insomniac
Tossing and Turning

We’ve all been there, nights when you just can’t sleep.
You’ve recited the alphabet backwards, even counted sheep,
No matter what you try, hot milky drinks, radio on low,
To restful. Hard earned sleep you still can’t go.

I remember those early days, Saturday Matinee serials
I had to go next week, to see those final reels,
Did Skippy save Sonny from that landslip,
He did, I walked home happy with choc ice and chips

So my mind meanders further, recalling friends I’ve had,
Some old, some new a few good, lots bad,
I remember friends who’ve passed, the things I said didn’t mean,
Worst of all, things I did not do and were never seen.

I glance across to the wall mounted clock, ten to three,
When will blessed sleep come to me.
Mockingly the dawn chorus begins to sing
I refuse to believe, the alarm I set for eight begins to ring!
