The second of my collections of poems written for "Express It In Eight."
As usual these days, I choose blog format because it offers more space for the work.

Monochrome Moments

All our yesterdays,
mirrored in the old man’s eyes,
as the mind, finding the day too long,
finds solace in the past.

These reruns of those times,
treasured fragments of ourselves,
call sweetly now and draw us back
as the credits begin to stream.

Adamant

Strangely, I remember Adam Ant,
that odd phenomenon of pop
from the early eighties.
Talentless, he rode the wave
of silly costumes and awful sounds
and now is long forgotten.

All part of life’s rich tapestry,
of which, for once, I’m adamant.

The Water Drop

in grasping the holdless ceiling
defies the sight and mind of man
denies the fact of river
lake and stream
proposes cloudbed rivers borne
by windy banks
to seas and oceans
of the sky.

Prompt: Write a ceiling poem.
Note: This is a bit of a cheat since it was actually written in 1970 and is not brand new therefore. It fitted the prompt so well and I was feeling equally uninspired that I felt I might get away with pointing at it today. It is also unusual that, in order for it to make sense, the title should be read as though it were the first line of the poem.

Tree and colonised smaller tree.

Chip and Block

No need to stand alone
for I’ll support you
with intravenous sap
and flying buttress.

Together we can make it
and reach the sunlit heights
to greet the passing breeze
and sip the humus earth.

A Poem About What Happened

Are we talking history,
the savage hordes at the gates of Rome,
Napoleon in Egypt,
the Wright brothers in Kitty Hawk,
Prometheus stealing fire,
Krakatoa losing its temper,
or are you asking
who broke the window yesterday?

Good Gnus

Gnomes in the garden
Fish in the sea
Begging your pardon
It’s little old me.

Dragons in the sky
Nessie in the bay
Something in my eye
That’s all I have to say.

Bad Habits

Bad habits are the curse of monks
beyond even their sleepless bunks
when all their clothes are made of hessian
it’s no wonder they’re in such a messian.

And though the cut is wondrous simple
they don’t smile enough to raise a dimple
their habits are so terrible scratchy
they’re all they have and so must patchy.

Flower

You’re anybody’s
a siren call to the day
spreading your invitation
in open suggestion
to the passing crowd
you entreat penetration
to your sweet delights
and rapacious seed.

Hummingbirds

Amethyst and emerald,
ruby red and agate,
jewels on vibrant wings
flashing in the sun,
sipping at the flowers’ spring,
ever mobile to and fro,
they sail the febrile air,
attendants to the day.

A Failed Stratagem

Some people say there's nothing better
than a really fiercely hot red pepper,
a warrior spice to set your mouth aflame,
who is the bravest, that's the game.

But to the plant that owned the pod,
the thing is grown not for the nod
of humans strange and the games they play,
it's supposed to scare, keep us away!
