I felt this way for years. Becoming a newspaper reporter helped me get over my fear of writing something, putting my name on it, and publishing it.
Eventually that confidence made its way to my novel writing. I'm glad I got over it in time to hear my Mom introduce me to her friends as "My daughter, the writer". I almost waited too long. Don't.
I share this dilemma. You want honest feedback, but how much should you change what you have written because of it?
I recommend asking for feedback from avid readers as opposed to writers. Writers tend to tell you how they would write it. It is your voice not theirs.
I ask my (at least 3) "beta readers"
1. Don't just tell me you love it. That does not help me improve.
2. Do you have questions? Want to know more about a character or a situation?
3. Did you have to re-read a sentence, paragraph, or page to understand it?
4. Were my transitions too abrupt or not make sense? (New paragraph or chapter)
5. Did you see the end coming or were you surprised?
And I acknowledge them in the book's prologue or epilogue.
One of my best friends has hated all my books - still love her.
One of my readers had a career in printing. She is a great proof-reader.
One of my readers is a writer herself and I can't use her any more because she wants to replace too many word orders (ex. He ran quickly. Instead of He quickly ran.) Does it really matter?
I'm strolling through your portfolio and enjoying myself.
Don't want to be too self-promoting, but from what I see of your interests I wonder if you'd enjoy one of my novels? Unintended Consequences - Wallis & Edward
I am fascinated with British Monarchy across the centuries. I'm amazed at by the simply consequence of birth you can be flung into such a complicated dynasty.
If you are interested, I'd be happy to send you a copy. I'm not about making money off my friends.
Oh, good for you. My daughter had a similar experience in her past marriage and getting out of it is one of the things I'm most proud of her for accomplishing.
