Just revised a story I wrote for a contest. Originally, it was one hundred thirty two words long, and twenty of them were the prompt words. I wrote it quickly and didn't think about it too much. I submitted it to the contest and to the Bradbury challenge. And that was it. Then today I was going through my email and came across a newsletter that was highlighting the contest I had entered, and it mentioned that the minimum word count for the stories was one thousand words. I was a few words short of the minimum, so I spent the last hour using my original story as a sort of outline, and I fleshed the story out it is now one thousand sixty two words long and a lot better. The additional effort really shows in the end product. I need to do this more. I am thinking about going back and expanding each of the drabbles I wrote last year into longer works of around a thousand words. I have also thought about starting a two or three part contest. Part one would be to write a short story of twenty words or fewer. Then part two would be to expand it to one hundred words. Part three would be to expand it to one thousand to fifteen hundred words. I could make it so the winning story of part one is the prompt for part two, and the winning story is the prompt for part three. They wouldn't necessarily have to be strict expansions with details remaining precisely the same but rather inspired by the previous winner. That way, people could compete in the story length or lengths they are comfortable with and have a chance of winning their category without having had to write the previous or the next story. There would be a grand prize category for those people who did write in all three parts of the contest that those who only wrote one or two parts wouldn't be elligible for to encourage full participation. One of the prizes could be to choose two prompt words for the next round of the contest, a badge, and maybe some gift points. I have been thinking of this for a while. I think it could be fun if people would try it.
Oh, wow, over three hundred words just talking about a contest idea. Grammarly is suggesting corrections today, and I do not choose to follow them. |
