#19 Late 1980's Sounds - Melissa Etheridge

I discovered Melissa when I was stationed at the 295th MP Company in Romulus, New York. I would put on her albums while I drove from New York to Vermont & New Hampshire.

I liked that Melissa's music was strong, bold and brave. That was the kind of soldier I wanted to be. Her first album was amazing with some great songs: Similar Features, Like the Way I Do, Bring Me Some Water, etc. I liked that her songs had a driving backbone, were "rock-y" and "folk-y" as well.

Melissa's lyrics always intrigued me. I liked her word play, and how that weaved into the music on a long drive to home.

When I was stationed in Germany the 2nd time during DEC 89- DEC 92, I saw Melissa in concert. I knew every song she played and sung them at the top of my lungs.

Her wiki page says she's known for her confessional lyrics, folk rock, and raspy vocals. And that's what makes Melissa works. Her lyrics resonated me right down to the heart. Mind you, Melissa's confessionals weren't my confessionals, but she understood those raw, gritty feelings I was feeling and that came across in her songs, her lyrics, and her vocals.

Melissa came out as a lesbian in Jan 1993. I really admired her for that. It was gutsy, real, and an honest confession that resonated. And it made me understand her lyrics in a different, meaningful way. She saw me through a period of emotional growth, honesty, and strength and I thank her for that.
