Washing Up

The remains of the day,
crumbs left on the plate,
seconds, moments scattered
in the wake of our passing,
the disregarded debris
of time’s constant clamour,
wait in the dish pile
for memory’s washing.

Dew laden web catchers the morning light.

Lacemaker

Lacemaker gathers the morning dew
stitches and fiddles and tats her design
round and round bright threads she weaves
catches the light but with others in mind
dreams of the mayflies and sweet butterfly
plans on the beetles and sucks them quite dry
her artistry done she ties the last knot
then waits in the shadows to see what is caught.

Suburban Legend

They’ve put something in the water,
something they didn’t oughta,
they told us it’s to do us good,
but there’s a rumour in the ‘hood,
it’ll turn us into zombies,
just like old Abercrombie,
who they certified as dead,
then found sleeping in his bed.

Compass

Trembling, yet with certain assurance,
you point the way, unwavering
between this and that, here and there,
your indicating finger adamant
as you declare allegiance
to your stated purpose, your chosen path,

Such single-minded devotion
to your allotted task!

A cluttered bedroom.

Teenworld

They call it mess but they don’t know
that in my head it’s all just so;

and all that I possess is here,
to me it’s all so very clear

that everything must have its place,
each valued thing in its own space.

My mom she tidied yesterday,
and now I’ve got it back this way.

Honour

Prince of poets, Robert Frost,
died in ‘63 to our cost,
four Pulitzer Prizes won,
and for America’s favourite son
(young JFK), a poem read,
a ringing paean upon his head,
but which the greater honoured be?
If you ask me, ‘twas Kennedy.

Musical instruments pouring from a man's head.

Composers

Brahms, Beethoven and JS Bach,
Haydn, Liszt, Debussy,
Mozart, Strauss, Bela Bartok,
and others just as juicy,
Schubert, Gershwin, Tchaikovsky,
Wagner, Grieg, and Verdi,
Saint-Saëns, Rachmaninoffsky,
were musical, not wordy.

Bewildered

Be wilder shouts the madding crowd
I would not care if it weren’t so loud

And noise is but a two-edged sword
Quiet requires we reach accord

They beat the drum give peace a chance
And all it seems will riot enhance

The fuss leads all to fault and blunder
While I stand by in silent wonder.

Stream

Snow on the heights,
the mountains robed,
white swathes bite,
the frozen probe,
blunted by the sun,
the stream slips,
and winter’s done,
cold water nips.

Geology

From the turbulence of life,
history lays down its strata,
sheets of sediment compacted,
containing all that was and
leaving us the lessons of the past.
We can read through the ages
for truth or, head in the clouds,
wish for time to stop.
