Cardinal Asides Psst! Pass on - Arnold’s a redneck. Tell me again - why don’t we fly south for the winter? I told you we shouldn’t allow females in the clergy. I thought it was supposed to be ducks in a row. Hey, Ginger, why the dark face? Honestly, Martha, it was enough to make a gal blush. What time does the store open anyway? Autumn colours are all very well but it’s winter now! Line count: 8 Free rein For Express It In Eight, 12.22.22 Prompt: As per illustration. Note: Not poetry, I know, but the illustration cries out for a caption. |
Cat Eyes fixed upon the spot, she crouches low, back legs wound tight and gathered, twitches and adjustments made, she calculates, then unwinds, an arrow from a bow, springs upward and out, lands with perfect precision, exactly where desired. Line count: 8 Free verse For Express It In Eight, 12.21.22 Prompt: Not having seen either movie from which the prompt quotes were taken, I thought I’d test the rule that states departure from the strict adherence to suggested subjects is allowed. |
Gaboon Viper Oh, I’m poisonous alright, and pretty as sin with my diamond shaped colours, my great, chiselled head and bloated body, but my heart’s as dark as the night, the forest night, that is, deep in the undergrowth where the stars don’t reach and I lie camouflaged, waiting for you. Line count: 8 Free verse For Express It In Eight, 12.20.22 Prompt: Write a poem about something poisonous. |
Journey Yes, there is romance in the highway, that line drawn to the horizon, distance being the drug that seduces the senses, and constant movement that lulls the mind , promising always the unseen elsewhere and destinations ripe with otherness, far beyond what’s gone before. Yes, running away, but running to as well. Line count: 8 Free verse For Express It In Eight, 12.16.22 Prompt: Highway. |
Rodent Revels The cat being away, the mice do play, on ancient gramophone recordings by the Stones, not Rolling but Squeaking (of mouse bands I am speaking), and so they dance their way from night until the day. Line count: 8 Rhymed aabb For Express It In Eight, 12.15.22 Prompt: Illustration of mouse dancing to gramophone music. |
Vindication “Good things come to those who wait,” said the man standing at the stop. “The bus will come, the schedules state, my hopes are high, they do not drop.” And so he stood there in the rain, for hours he waited like a dunce, but he was right for down the lane came buses three and all at once. Line count: 8 Rhymed abab For Express It In Eight, 12.14.22 Prompt: Good things come to those who wait. |
Incandescence We came to a place where the trees thinned out, their bare trunks disappearing into the mist, like paint streaks against the wall of glowing light, while dark forms moved across the waters, enigmatic in shape, merging with the shadows, just trunks like the trees, cut off by their canoes, and a black bridge without reflection behind them. The vision dissolved in trembling ripples ahead. Line count: 8 Free verse For Express It In Eight, 12.13.22 Prompt: As per illustration. |
Homage to Ted Flower Though he’s long dead, I think of Ted, a man of boundless jest. Those childish pranks, below his rank, innocence at its best. So broad his smile, yet gone this while. Line count: 8 Rhymed aab ccb dd, syllables 446 446 44 For Express It In Eight, 12.12.22 Prompt: Prank. Notes: Ted was a nobody who tired of being a teacher in England and came out to Africa to build a new life. He was in his forties when I knew him and I much younger, but we shared a silly and sometimes practical sense of humour. It was a shock to learn that he had died suddenly at so early an age and I often think of him and his gloriously inappropriate surname. He was never what you’d call floral. Sleep well, Ted. |
