work in progress- writing assignments & links for use in the home school |
Recently I stumbled on an article at the following link:
In my fifteen years of home schooling, I searched in vain for an organized writing program that met my rather unorthodox standards for teaching writing. Silly me, to believe that kids learn to write by real-life writing, not by filling out worksheets, doing grammar exercises or writing a paragraph a week. I was forced to come up with my own writing assignments for the kids, which were dependent upon both my availability and my creative energy on any given day. What I really wanted was some system that they could fall back on when I was uninspired/unavailable- As in a list of writing ideas they could choose from, or writing sites they could use, when they were between long-term projects or when we all needed a change from routine. I will post weekly assignments here for my own kids, but leave them open to be read by any of you who are looking for writing ideas in your own home school. Check the postings regularly. You may want to assign some of them to your own kids, too. Keep in mind that my first priority is to tailor this to the peculiar needs of my own family; that means some of it may not work for you, especially if you don't register your kids here on Writing.com. I may also reference unexplained stuff that is specific to our own home school (things like "school folder" or family events). If you have questions about it, just ask me. I have opened free accounts for each of my home schooling kids (two have officially graduated & moved on to college. Mom no longer assigns academics to them). Mine will "turn in" their assignments in our private forum (for our family only) or in their writing notebooks, where I will check them. I will have them post finished, major projects in their portfolios for public review, awards, etc., rotating them out as they complete new items (so us po' folk don't have to pay for the nine accounts a family of nine requires!) In addition, I have posted a resource link of helpful sites I ran across for, both here on Writing.com and on the World Wide Web. I may reference sites from it in some assignments:
Please e-mail me with any writing activities or links that you think would be useful for children. You may just find your idea incorporated into this course! DIRECTIONS FOR STUDENTS: Whenever your folder says W.C (Writing.com), work on the dated assignment posted below. Written work goes in your writing notebook. Print off on-line work only when directed to do so. Put your writing notebook in the correction basket each day that you write in it. |
