The Kouta is an ancient Japanese form which is still popular today. The structure consists of four (occasionally five) lines, which should stand alone but is often accompanied by others with the same theme. The lines have variable odd-numbered syllable lengths, most frequently in patterns of 7, 5, 7, 5 or 7, 7, 7, 5. The theme projects a view of ordinary life, and commonly includes onomatopoeia, as described and demonstrated in the following link: http://www.poetrymagnumopus.com/forums/topic/1132-kouta/ .
