What do you mean, "How could this be the work of a loving God?"!!! God sent his son, Jesus Christ, to live the perfect life and then die (only to rise again 3 days later) so that none of the people you mentioned would have to go to hell. How is that unloving? He died a gruesome death so that we wouldn't have to spend eternity in hell. All we have to do is believe in him. It's a free gift because he loves us. If we had to be good and work our way to heaven, then it would be unloving, because some people have unfair advantages over others. Not everyone would be able to make it on their own. I don't understand your logic.
