DISCUSSION: Visual Presentation of a Poem As poets, we often wish to share our poetry with other people, and therefore, we must consider how to beckon them to a poem before they begin reading it. One way to grab a reader’s attention is to present a poem in an interesting way on the page, such as by altering a poem’s physical shape or placement in the white space. If you think about it, the absence of text draws your eye to the text. In addition, a poet sometimes uses visual effect by deciding how to use the space between the lines and all around the poem. Here are some reasons for making use of white space in your poetry: • gives the reader a moment to digest what was just read • can heighten suspense • can affect the pace of the reading • can express a visual aspect of the content of the poem • might express a silence or pause • sometimes creates another dimension in meaning • can improve readability Remember, there isn't one correct way to use any poetic technique. Poetry is freedom, and you get to choose! ><><><><><>< Note how these poets use their space in different ways. https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/44432/the-embankment https://poets.org/poem/red-wheelbarrow https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/47247/in-just https://tuactivitytoolkit.files.wordpress.com/2016/12/concrete-poem-example-the-... ><><><><><>< Write a poem with your white space in mind.
