DISCUSSION: Why People Write Poetry

People write poetry for different reasons. Most poets love words, and words are the building blocks of a poet’s art. Using them as tools, writers can accomplish many goals.

Writing poetry …

  helps you explore all the feelings, ideas, dreams, fears, emotions that dwell within you
  gives you an outlet for your creativity
  can give you a deeper understanding of your language
  encourages you to experiment with words, ideas, and forms
  offers you the freedom to say exactly what you wish to say
  allows you to brainstorm ideas
  frees you to be serious or lighthearted
  opens you up to the possibilities of sounds and rhythm
  helps you clarify moments and events in your life
  allows you to write by “the rules” or to break writing rules
  gives you the chance to share your artistry with other people
  makes you consider the words you choose
  can spark your interest and curiosity for reading others’ poetry

Of course, the list above isn’t comprehensive; it could go on and on. Think about the reasons you write poetry and share some reasons you would add to the list.
