I struggle to stop being an introvert. I dislike being the center of attention in any group setting. At my last place of employment, in a small real estate division within the larger company, I knew some of the people already there as I had worked with them many years ago in another office with the same company. Assimilation was not very hard. The hard part came when on the last day of our department head's retirement, we threw him a little party. One of my co-workers had written a very nice farewell speech that included our comments. As we gathered in the conference room before the Man of the Hour arrived, someone pressed the farewell document into my hand to read aloud. Oh, Great! Give it to the introvert with the stutter, to read it aloud. I was at one end of the long room, and my soon-to-be former boss was at the opposite end. Taking a deep breath, centering my attention on the text, I read it aloud, no word stutters, no hands shaking, no threatening tears building in my eyes. I was able to corner him later to say a personal goodbye and invade his person space with a goodbye hug. GaelicQueen |
