I go for biographies of people who have done something interesting with their lives, irrespective of whether they are major historical figures.
I tend to be wary of autobiographies, as too many of them can be...how shall I put it?...self-servingly unreliable (whether intentional or not), while others desperately need a good editor. (I've still to make much progress with the memoirs of General William T Sherman, the Union General from the US Civil War. God Almighty, that man's obsession with trivial detail...I do NOT need to know the names and details of fellow passengers on an innocuous long coach trip he once made in his youth.) Though having said that, I've had "The Seven Pillars Of Wisdom" by T.E. Lawrence sitting in my "waiting pile" for some time now. After reading a biography, this has got to be a must-read.
