I was deployed to Eglin AFB (near Fort Walton Beach, Florida) for an exercise in '79, just in time for Hurricane Frederic. We had to come in from the field, tape all the windows in the barracks, and then spend the night crammed into the base's dispensary / clinic. Frederic shifted west and smacked Mobile, Alabama pretty hard, leaving us with a bunch of leaves on the ground and next to no damage. I was in Monterey, California for the '89 Loma Prieta earthquake. The shaking wasn't anywhere near as violent as it was even just 10 miles north, but it still caused a fair amount of damage in our housing area. Of course, anyone who remembers that quake remembers what happened in the Bay Area; we were spared that kind of direct hit. ![]() |
