Chapter #3

Wandering in darkness...

by: evil dude Author IconMail Icon
Gary walked alone in the darkness, tired, thirsty, and defenceless. He had drank his last bottle of water over a day ago when he had decided to take refuge in the subway tunnels under the city. It had been five days since it happened, and he still couldn't believe it. The dead were walking. This wasn't a movie or a game or a book, the dead were really walking, and killing. Gary could still remember that day it all started as if it had only happened mere hours ago. He had been driving to work when someone stumbled out in front of his car, a young police officer no older then 25. There was no chance for Gary to react... the car turned the officer into a human frisbee and sent him flying into a fire hydrant. In a panic Gary got out to see if there was anything he could do while some of the people nearby called 911.

The officer decided not to wait for Gary to come over, however, and grabbed a woman who had gotten a little too close to him. The woman screamed as he belched out a thick red goo onto her and himself as well. By the time rescue workers were there all that was left of the woman was a bloody corroded corpse laying in the street, but that was the least of their worries. By then the Slimer had killed itself with its own dripping acid slime and had dissolved into a new blue slime that had managed to trap a few unlucky people while they attempted to flee. They were easily finished off by the more powerful zombies while they were stuck and helpless. What had been a simple traffic accident soon escalated into a riot. Gary had managed to stay with a large group of people and got away from the growing assault, but as the zombies began appearing in greater number the groups started to disband, it would soon be everyone for themselves.

Two days after the incident on Cherry street Gary's group was down to 4 people. Then 3. Then 2. On the third day Gary's final ally was killed by a Deathtouch while he and Gary were raiding bottles of water from a supermarket. Of course, Gary managed to escape and enter the nearby subway station. Two days of wandering in the darkness aimlessly and getting lost later and here we are. Tired from walking Gary sat down on the cold ground and rested. After an hour of sitting in solitude he got back up and continued onward. Just as he was about to give up hope that he would never see the light of day again... he saw something up ahead. Something BRIGHT.

He picked up the pace a little and soon found the lights source. He had made it to a subway station that still had its lights on, it wasn't daylight, but it was good enough. After taking a moment to adjust his eyes to the sudden surge of brightness, Gary looked around at his surroundings. Up ahead of him was an overturned subway car and beyond that the tunnel was lit, which meant that the power was still on up ahead. Gary climbed up off of the subway tracks and onto the stations platform in search of a sign that might let him know where he is. After finding a sign next to the ticket window he read the name aloud. "Marigold Station." What luck! Marigold station was just 2 miles from his house, if he could get out of here he could go home...
