On Your Marks, Get Ready, ...
October is the month to prepare for the month that comes after October. November.
If you haven't done so yet, you must now quickly find an activity or forum that will coach you through preparing for NaNoWriMo in November. In the editor's choices, you can find a few groups and forums that want to help you through October and November so that you come out a novelist.
Want to get into the swing of things ahead of time? Want to explore your characters, your setting, your plot? There are many ways to do that. You can either take a breather and wait until the activities start, or you can warm up by checking in with "Daily Flash Fiction Challenge" , which asks for 300 word stories. Level up to 1,000 words per day with "The Writer's Cramp" . Inch your way closer to getting to those 1,667 words per day during November by writing for both contests each day.
Even if you don't submit your stories, putting your characters into the prompts offered by those contests will give you a chance to "meet" your characters in settings that you haven't thought up. See them react, see them act, hear them speak, and watch them grow into well-rounded characters with edges, flaws, habits, and a rich backstory.
I think you should submit every story you write for a contest as long as it fulfills the prompt. What's the worst that can happen? Somebody might send you a review and you might get some feedback.
Do you think that writing daily will wear you out ahead of time? Then go back to the other option and lay low until the madness starts. Whatever you do, do it with conviction and gusto. Never look back, only plan ahead a little, as long as you wring the most writing out of the here and now.

In response to my last newsletter {t-nl:} I got the following replies:
SantaBee wrote: Great suggestions for NaNoWriMo! I've done it 3 times (3x winner) and it's a very demanding month. You've got to be on top of your game. It's not easy to do. I admire all those who prep and try because it's a challenge.
Three times a winner! That's more than I can say of myself. I tried four times, reached the end twice. This year, although I'm itching for it on some level, I won't try for it. I've got first drafts all over the place. I need to revise, polish, edit, and proofread - all forbidden during NaNo.
Gaby wrote: This arrived at a perfect time. Mumsy , Fi , and I were just talking about this! Thanks for sharing all the awesome links. It just might inspire us to create something for NaNo.
Thank you for letting me know it was a timely announcement. I hope you can use some of the activities I highlighted.
