I look for a good hook at the beginning and like stories that "hit the ground running". Good plots with a theme, strong characters with an emotional impact, moving dialogue, sensory descriptions, clear communication and words with a purpose are strong points of a good story.
I'm good at...
knowing a good story when I read one. I like to read as much as I like to write, maybe more. I will let you know when a sentence just does not make sense to me, and I will try to give you my opinion on how to make it better.

Review of Bookend Love  Open in new Window.
Review by Ah, September! Author IconMail Icon
Rated: E | (5.0)
Hi Ida Joy,

A bookend kind of love, I like that. Love that lasts from birth till death. Bookends of love.

I thought the narrator was female almost until the ending, but it didn't really matter. A father is telling his daughter, who has fallen in love, how love should be. This is a wonderful story. Thank you for sharing it.

Review of Rosie And Maggie  Open in new Window.

Hi Harry,

I found you on the read and review, and since my mother's name was Rosie (by those who knew her well), I dove in.

This is not a new plot but you tell it with a freshness that kept me reading. I was thankful for Rosie's good heart and thankful, though unexpected, that she was rewarded for it, beyond her imagination.

The poem format actually added to the readability for me and was another factor that kept me going. Interesting.

Thanks for sharing this and keep writing.

Hello Lucretius,

I found you on the read and review and because I like flash fiction, I began to read. I like this story. It has an unexpected ending and leaves much to the reader's imagination. The scene is set through a few specific words and with a spare amount of dialogue, you put us in Billy's head.

I noticed one thing I might change and that was the final word, motionless. I would make that motionlessness.

Thanks for sharing. I enjoyed it.

Hello David Lutz,

Yes, I think your character was in the Twilight Zone, a program I loyally watched every time it was on.

Even though you have little dialogue, you have done a good job of showing your plot through the senses and through written notes. The kitty adds the idea of normalcy in an abnormal situation.

I enjoyed your story and found no way I could improve upon it. Thanks for sharing and keep writing.

Hello T.L. Finch,

I'm returning the favor of your review. Yes, I would like to dump trump, but no one was more surprised at his win. Hopefully, your prophecy will come true.

This is a very nice rhyming and easy flowing poem with a little sarcasm thrown in for good measure. I like the pictures, too.

Thanks for sharing and keep writing.

Hello Apondia,

I found you on the read and review. This story although dated 2015 sounds like it could be this year, too. Even here in Florida spring has seemed to come and go a couple of times.

I like your description of the front yard skating rink. At least something fun came of the glazing. And I'm sure the birds are thankful for the feed. It sounds like you live on a farm.

Our azaleas, dogwoods, and redbuds are all blooming but the temps tonight and tomorrow night are predicted to be in the 30s. Right now they are beautiful.

Thanks for sharing and keep writing.

Review of Preview  Open in new Window.

Hello Freezinq,

I found you on the read and review and the animal genre pulled me into your preview. The scene is touching and full of emotion for the son and mother felines. Living outside in all kinds of weather can bring all kinds of illnesses to animals. For Arvo to overcome this is a high mountain to climb. I wonder what he will do? He promises Adsila that no one will suffer such a tortuous death again. You have my interest.

Thanks for sharing this and I'll be watching for more.

Hello,

I found you on the read and review, and the title and first few lines pulled me in to your story.

I must say you have a unique view of the reason for writing, one I had not thought of. I'm (forever, it seems) working on a sort of life history for my children and grandchildren, and sometimes I wonder why? You have shared a new reason to keep going.

Thanks for sharing this very well-written (and enlightening) piece.

Hi Nikola,

I found you on the read and review, and being an animal lover, your title drew me in. I especially like stories written in first person animal. *Smile*

Puppy mills are horrible things and my heart goes out to all the little ones who have to suffer like this. Thank heavens for that farmer who drove by and for all the kind people who came to rescue.

I much prefer stories with happy endings so I am happy for this puppy.

Thanks for sharing this story and highlighting this topic.

Good Morning,

I found you on the read and review and since I love reading about people, I dove in.

The majority of your story seems what I would call down, but after you met your husband, happily, all that changes. It's sad that it took so long to diagnose your childhood stroke. Have you had physical therapy and has it improved things? I hope so. I applaud you for continuing with your education. I'm sure it changed your life in more ways than one.

Thanks for sharing and please keep writing.

Good Morning,

You have written an emotional story through dialogue, which "shows" rather than "tells." I certainly admire the writer's spirit and dedication.

Parents will never be happy about children who put themselves in danger, and you have expressed that point clearly.

Thanks for sharing your writing.

Hello,

I found you on the read and review and was pulled in by your title. I don't usually review poems, but as I started reading, the words just rolled along and I couldn't stop, excellent rhythm and rhyme.

And then there's the message. Which is the wrong side of the tracks and why is there a wrong side if there is one? To keep people apart? To tell good from bad? So sad. Let's do away with it!

Thanks for sharing this poem and this message.

Hi Genipher,

I found you on the read and review and I want one of those guitars!

What a neat story. I like the way Bowen didn't hurt Emory's feelings even though the guitar was miniscule and seemingly of no consequence as far as guitars were concerned. And maybe this is why the "magic" happened.

Great story. Thanks for sharing and keep writing.

Hello,

Yes, Pride and Prejudice is one of my favorites too as is Jane Austen. I've never seen Lost in Austen but I'm going to look it up, maybe Netflix or Prime.

And like you I love those times, clothes, manners...maybe not the outhouse though *Laugh*. And Colin Firth is a favorite, too. I've watched all the movies made from the novels, Emma is my 2nd fav.

Thanks for reminding my how much I love her writing. I enjoyed reading your article and the photos very much.

Hello Rogue Writer,

I found you on the Read and Review, and your first line pulled me in. My husband was an Airman at Dover AFB and I'm a Dover DE native transplanted to Florida for many years now. I watched many C-130s land.

Your story sounds personal but could apply to many who enlist. I am grateful for the sacrifice of military personnel. Each and everyone is a hero as far as I'm concerned.

Thanks for sharing this glimpse in the how and why of military service, and please keep writing.

Hello,

I found you on the Read and Review and your title caught my eye. Your writing imagery is fantastic, almost like a motion picture, and you almost made me feel sad for the devil *Laugh*.

I'm happy to hear even the devil dreams of happiness and feels sadness as well as other less sympathetic emotions. The story seemed to be a dream within a dream.

Thanks for sharing this well-written glimpse into the underworld. And keep writing.

Hi JoAnn,

I found your uplifting story on Read and Review. Yes, you had a very lucky run and as you say so many terrible things could have happened.

Thanks for sharing that info about driving a car without the alternator working, something I didn't know either, but it certainly makes sense if you have a fairly new and well-charged battery.

I'm really glad you made it home safely and agree that you had some angels along the way.

Thanks for sharing this story and, yes, write some more.

Hello,

I found you on the read and review page, and the title sounded refreshing so I began to read.

What a surprise when I found out this was a Dial M for Murder story. It's difficult to decide who was more deserving but it looks like the wife was the true victim in the end.

It was an easy fast read and well-written. Thanks for sharing and keep writing.

Good Morning Anne Arthur,

I found you on the Read and Review and loved this little snapshot of a young person's life. Fresh bread has so many memories for many people and symbolizes so much.

The sneaked hole in the bottom made the story personal, adding a whole lot to its telling.

Thanks for sharing and keep writing.

Hello,

I found your story under the "Read and Review." I'm always drawn to personal stories and yours is a good one, sad but yet somehow uplifting.

Grandpa was a tough old guy but with the heart and values of a king. I hope very much that he wasn't able to read that shameful sign.

Your story has good flow and gives a lot of information in very few words. Thanks for sharing and please keep writing.

Hi Intuey,

Your poem came up on "read and review". Is this a real radio show? I love many of the NPR shows but usually only get to listen when I'm driving.

Your poem was a quick read, a lilting tone with good rhymes, and you include a lot of information about the show. Sounds interesting, like something you can't resist.

According to the info at the end, it looks like you followed the prompt...with relish! Thanks for sharing and keep writing.

Hi Tadpole 1,

For someone who loves the water and fears hardly anything about it, you had me reading your story...fast and furious. You made great use of short, choppy sentences to enhance the drama, and your descriptions put me in the place. Was curiosity his only reason for doing this? And I liked the candle wax in the ears, will need to look that up.

Thanks for sharing and keep writing.

Hi there,

I loved this exploration into a character's desire...even a glass of water. Well done.

You have written it well, showed almost all the activity through dialogue, and given the reader a good idea of who this character really is.

Thanks for sharing this. I'll have to take a stab at it, too.

Hi Jellybean 4401,

I found your review request on the Hub page and thoroughly enjoyed your new poem written from the eyes of the newborn.

I can imagine a baby thinking all these things and you've done it so well in rhyming verse. You've also given the reader a story to go along with the rhythm and rhyme.

One typo I noticed...5th line from bottom...it should be in.

Thanks for sharing this. It's a keeper.

Hi Genipher,

This was howlarious. Congratulations on your Cramp win!

You matched up fairy tales like a professional and kept me smiling all the way through your story. Of course, my favorite was "I've got a bone to pick," being wolves and all, so funny. I love your sense of humor and your writing style. Keep doin' it!
