This is the kind of story that leaves the reader with a warm nostalgic feeling. It's a great winter read, despite the fall theme, because it envelops the kind of love and open giving associated with this time of year. I'll admit to almost not reading this because of the title. I'm not sure what would be better in its place, but it didn't draw my interest. Luckily, your description worked its magic, as did your gift for the written word.
I've come across few authors here who have the ability to pull me in and make me feel as if I am a part of the world they created. The scenes with the kids dancing around were great, as were the descriptions of the librarian's house. I would have liked to known a bit more about her personality, bookwormishness aside. Did she like living alone? It felt like all we got to see was her workaholic side and the books she buried herself in. Maybe a hint of lonliness or the contentment she drew form the solitude would help accent the character. I just felt like something was missing there.
All that aside, this was wonderfully written. The story flowed along quickly with a knowledgable blend of action and dialouge. Only one part dragged, where she described each donation and where it came from. Your descriptions were wonderful without being too weighty. Yours is a portfolio I look forward to visiting again.
Interesting contest, Mara. I don't believe I've seen anything like it here before, but your themes and decor are most appealing. (I might have to stop by here now and then for some good reading material!) The prizes are quite generous and the word count high enough to let the author's imagination roam. That is a huge plus. Attractive layout with clear guidelines and easy to read segments that don't boggle the reader's eyes. I'd say you have a good thing going here. It almost makes me want to pick up a pen and give it a go!
Good luck to you and your endeavors. I wish your contest the best of success now and in the future.
