Writing for Relaxation
I don't know about you all, but I could always use more avenues to try to find some peace of mind. Even hobbies that are meant to inspire calmness and relaxation can quickly turn into pockets of stress for certain types of people (myself included).
I think it can be important to find ways to de-stress and relax, particularly revolving around our hobbies that might lead toward our life goals and aspirations. Many of us would love to be published one day, and that can take a lot of work and effort. Writing itself can be extremely rewarding, but it often takes a lot of stress, too.
Do you write for relaxation? Is that even possible? I think it is.
Journaling - One way to de-stress is to write about your thoughts and feelings toward what's going on. It can help you process complex emotions. A WDC journal/blog can also help you connect with others! Check out "The Blog Board" [E] for some recent blog entries!
Stream of Consciousness - Throw out your plans and plots and just write! This can be a tough exercise for a lot of writers, but it can be an effective way to get a handle on what you're thinking or what your characters are thinking. Get inside their heads and let their thoughts out on the page!
Poetry - For me, poetry can be much more about feelings and imperfections. It's not that way for everyone, but I find writing poetry to be freeing far more than fiction. Give it a try!
Prompt-based Contests - Sometimes not having to come up with an idea can be less stressful. Take a look through WDC's many contests and activities until a prompt sparks an idea and run with it! Find something fun that intrigues you, and it just might help bring some relaxation, too!
Most articles and ideas around writing for relaxation revolve around journaling, and while that can certainly be a great avenue for it, I think there are many more! Writing exercises like sprints and brainstorming can be a fun respite from more "serious" writing ventures. Do you have any suggestions for writing for relaxation? Share them below in the feedback form!
Take care, and as always, keep on writing!

Feedback from my last newsletter "Contests & Activities Newsletter (May 1, 2024)" }, which discussed fonts:
I'm mostly plain vanilla. My typing in using Times New Roman or similar typeface. I'll use emojis like a smile or a heart if I like what I've read. GQ
~ GaelicQueen
When I was young and foolish, I wrote everything in Times New Roman for the simple reason that it looked most like a published piece. Now that I'm older and don't give a damn about publishing, all I care about is legibility, so I stick with the the standard Arial of WdC. Everything else is just dross and folly.
