Talk about perks, my job has one of the best ones I can think of! I travel in the course of business, delivering classes for my employer. I am a Senior Training Specialist for Motorola Solutions, and teach classes on a wide variety of subjects centered around 2 way radio communications. I'm qualified to deliver approximately 30 different classes, but about half of those are 'Legacy' classes, and are not in demand anymore. My students are technicians, those who maintain, program, calibrate, and repair large 2-way radio systems. Some of these systems are statewide, and use TCP-IP networking to allow sites to communicate with others. Some are small, traditional type radio sites. The size doesn't matter, in each case the systems must be kept operational at all times, since many of them are Public Safety Systems. So I get to travel, sometimes frequently, 3-4 weeks in a row.... where am I this week? This probably won't have daily entries, but I will make entries when I get to go somewhere, and keep an updated list of coming trips. My schedule changes faster than the weather, so don't be too surprised to see me list an upcoming class, only to remark later on that it is cancelled, or delayed. Delays are fine of course, but a later date might mean that someone else gets to go instead of me,,, Well, here we go with this, let's see where it takes us. | Locale: Bloomington, IL. I will be home this week after all. I was originally scheduled to deliver an online class to the Los Angeles World Airport, but that was changed last Monday night. Instead, I was now going to visit High Point NC again. That all changed (again) on Thursday. The manager of the radio shop I was going to be at, has a family member who tested positive for COVID-19. So, it's cancelled of course. Now, I'll be here at home working on preparing to deliver a tailored class next month. The class last week ended up well it seems. Their radio system is unique as I mentioned in my last entry. One of the things their system supports, is the use of cell phones interfacing with the radios. Cell phones are really radios that operate in what's called 'Full Duplex'. The difference between a cell phone and a radio? Full Duplex means one can transmit and receive at the same time. Radios are half duplex, meaning they can do one or the other, not at the same time. Plus, cell phones operate at different frequencies than radios, so that may make you wonder some. And of course, there's an answer for that too. As I've mentioned several times in other entries, our radio system uses the same kind of devices that the internet does for wide area communication. It's all 'IP' based (Digital, 1's and 0's, not a frequency). So, we use IP devices to interface between the cell phone network, and our radio network. The drive home was something else, and very tiring. Once class was done Thursday (about 2:30), I drove to Virginia Beach to visit a friend of ours. I arrived there about 6:30, and while there, I picked up an Akita puppy she had from a recent litter. I was there almost an hour before heading out. I drove another 3-4 hours, and finally stopped in Charlottesville for the night. (Sorry Robert Waltz  , I was only there overnight, and far too late, so made no plans to drop by. We could have made plans to meet, but I'd hoped to take the northern route for a couple of reasons). I was finally in bed by a little after midnight (I'd woken at 4am that morning), then got up at 6:30 to get the puppy walked and such before hitting the road at 7:30. The drive was long and tedious, made more so by me following the GPS directions, and not questioning why at a certain point.In West Virginia, there's a toll road near Beckley, and a previous driver had set the GPS to avoid toll roads. When the GPS directed me off the Interstate, I thought it was a shorter, faster route. That wasn't the case at all. Because I was on state/county highways now, there were a lot of hairpin turns and slow downs. As a result of all this, I lost at least 1.5-2 hours of time. To top it all off, as I was leaving Huntington WV, just on the west side, traffic came to a stop. MAJOR accident about a quarter mile in front of me! Thank God I wasn't near it or involved in it. But, traffic was at a dead stop for at least an hour. So, I lost three hours of driving all together that day. That was nothing compared to those in that accident. I don't know if anyone was killed in that accident, I never heard any news, never saw the wreckage. By the time traffic moved again, everything was cleaned up, except for minor debris. As a result of those two delays, I didn't get home Friday night until a bit after 10. Another long day. I've decided to drive on my next trip also. Sarasota Florida. I'll leave about noon on Friday, visit a co-worker from Motorola who retired in January (lives in Tennessee), and avoid Atlanta. This means I will most likely drive through Alabama, north to south along I-65. In Closing I will spend the weekend and next week at home before heading off to Florida. | Locale: Washinton DC This week finds me in Washington DC to deliver a class to a customer I've never taught before. The White House Communications Agency. Before you all get all excited or upset about my customer, just know that we are no where near the White House for this class. The training location is south, across the Anacostia River from DC, on the Anacostia/Bolling Joint Base. Their system is a pretty unique one, a bit different from other customer's systems. I guess it figures, being they maintain communications for the White House staff, President, and such, especially when he travels. I'm not sure what all they support/do for the White House, but their system is large, and as I mentioned, setup in an unusual way. I chose to drive here for this class, and the drive was pretty interesting. I posted in the newsfeed about seeing a Semi on fire in Indianapolis. The firefighters hadn't arrived yet, and the cab was fully engulfed in flames. I could feel the hear through my car's rolled up window, even though I was on the far right lane going the opposite direction the truck had been going. The other thing that was unusual for this trip, is that my credit card chip decided it was a good time to malfunction. The card itself is fine, it can be swiped, everything is fine with the account. But the chip can't be read. I called the bank about it, and the guy told me it was probably their card reader. I had to explain to him that I'd tried using it in three different locations about 10 miles apart. He still didn't think the chip would go bad. His words, "That's very unusual, those chips don't fail." I couldn't believe that he was refusing to think the chip could fail, and kept insisting it was the card readers. I contacted the Motorola department that handles this stuff, and a new card is on the way. To my house....  Once I arrived here, I had a message from our scheduler. I was scheduled to deliver a Networking class from home next week. Now I'll deliver the same class, in High Point NC. The instructor scheduled to go was a last minute replacement due to us losing two instructors to retirement recently. He can't travel though, so him and I swapped classes. I know it wasn't possible, but it would have been nice to know about 3 weeks ago. We could have planned a 3 week work-cation, and drove here to Washington DC, then to High Point NC, then down to Sarasota Fl, then driving home. How nice that would have been! As it is, I will get home Friday, then fly to Greensboro NC via DFW on Sunday, fly home Friday, then fly to Sarasota Florida on Sunday, and home on Friday. Then I'm home for 2 weeks before having to travel again. In Closing I will spend the weekend at home before heading off to NC. Til next time, be good to yourselves and those you love, and WRITE! | Locale: Bloomington, Illinois Well, here I sit at home once again. Work has picked up for all of us. We have a backlog of classes to deliver, some that we need to complete after having completed the theory portion online, and it keeps piling up. Our management team is doing a fantastic job in supporting us. Both of our immediate managers are former instructors, and our Instructor manager still deliver classes when needed. This past week was same class I've delivered on line two or three time in recent memory. Remember, this is a pretty new class for me, and requires learning a new form of configuration software, as learning more about the Master Site and its software. After delivering it four times, I understand what needs to happen with this class. Even though I edited it/re-wrote it in March, it needs a complete tear-down and re-write. Our software changes, sometimes pretty fast, and you have to keep the course material current. That didn't happen with this class. So, while it's not a complete 'back to the drawing board' effort, it will be close. I have finally decided, or realized, what sequence the labs (Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet work) need to be done, and know that the current labs just won't fit the bill. With the help of a co-worker, we exported the necessary portions of the configuration software to a CSV file, and I will use those to generate the new labs. For me, the hardest part was deciding what order they should be completed. I've decided. Did I say work was picking up? Well, if I didn't, it has. Early this year I scheduled two weeks of PTO for myself (in October), so I can get home to New Mexico for the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta. If it is still scheduled. So I have those two weeks free. I have the week of July 4th free. Other than that, I'm teaching classes every week until Thanksgiving.. Even Labor Day week. This is VERY unusual for us. But it's not just me, all of us are scheduled the same way, we're all just as busy. But I love it. The second class in Washington DC has been delayed by the customer. Their Technicians want the class in person, their management wants it done remotely. The thing about technical classes, is you NEED that hands on time to learn how to do things. We'll see what the future holds, and when that class gets re-scheduled. In Closing I will spend the weekend at home here before teaching class from home next week. | Locale: Bloomington, Illinois Well, here I sit at home once again. I can't believe it's been three weeks since I posted an entry, but a lot has gone on at work. We are seeing some people leaving/retiring at work, and changes made to our delivery process, and the use of contractor end-user instructors. What that means is, our work load is more than doubling, but out instructional staff isn't. Gone are the days of us teaching a maximum of three weeks, with that fourth week being a mandatory week off. I have to say that I've never been a fan of that policy, mainly because of this thought process. I'm an instructor, I'm supposed to teach classes. There are those in the public school sector who do far more than I'm required to, and only get time off during the summer. Except, their time off is spent preparing for the next year, getting things in order, and maybe attending mandatory classes to further their education. So to me, I should be ready, willing, and able, to teach a class every week. Just MHO. Well, I get my wish, and as they say, be careful what you wish for. I had the entire month of March free, with no delivery. Add half of April to that. Since then, I've been pretty busy, (and I was pretty busy those weeks off too) teaching classes. I'll give you an idea of how things are changing. In the first two quarters of 2020, I delivered 59 days of training. That's right at the desired number of days per quarter that management wants us to deliver. Now as I say this next part, understand that my schedule can change on a moments notice, with classes at least 2 weeks to a month away being added or dropped. Right now though, I am scheduled for 56 days of delivery in the 3rd quarter alone! That's almost as much as I delivered from January through June! And no, while I know classes may come and go on my schedule, I don't think I will see less days scheduled. So if you wonder if I'm busy while still remaining home all this time, "Yes, I am." And I'm thrilled, while also asking myself, "What have I gotten myself into?" I am scheduled to go to Washington DC the week after July 4th, and again two weeks later. Those deliveries may become 'virtual' online deliveries, teaching the classes from home. I'm also scheduled to be in Los Angeles between those Washington DC classes, that too may become virtual. When I say virtual, what we do with the class, is teach all the theory we can, while also doing demonstrations on the equipment. At a later date, the students will have to come to either Schaumburg, or our Fort Lauderdale facility to perform the hands-on activities. The advantage for them though, is they can complete 2 or 3 classes (perhaps) in one week! The drawback is, how much time will have passed between their 'theory' portion, and actual hands-on portion. It remains to be seen. All of this is still a work in progress, for us, as well as our customers. We'll see what the future holds. | Locale: Home, <Sigh> This week finds me at home once again/still/will I ever travel again? I delivered an online class called 'Fleetmapping'. This is the course I worked so hard on in March/April. But, the usual thing happened in class this week that happens when you write something. I'm sure you'll be able to relate. You know how you write something and read it through. Then read again, and again, and maybe again. Until you finally decide it 's about as perfect as you can get it. So you post it on WDC, and receive a couple of good reviews on it. Then someone gives it an average review, and points out several errors in wordings/spelling/grammar? Yeah, that's what happened this week in class. So it's back to editing it again. The slides are fine, but could be organized better maybe, or perhaps this course needs a major re-write. After all, I just learned the course as I adapted it to a shorter delivery time, and improved (or so I thought) the spreadsheets used for student activities. I also edited the lab guide that really guides the students through the spreadsheets. A lot of this course is based on setting things up in the spreadsheets for the customer's radio system (and their portable/mobile radios), and is based on a software program that is not a part of any course I deliver. So it's a challenge. I'm not happy with the class this week, only because I realize that it's not 'perfect', and still requires some work. So next week, it's back to the editing mill for me. I am determined to get these course materials to a higher level. I have to deliver it two weeks in a row starting three weeks from Monday, and my manager will be delivering it in July. Why is he delivering it? Because none of us are available, and they can't move anyone around on the schedule to free me that week. Why are we so short all of a sudden? It's neither here nor there, but with everything starting back up (post-CoronaVirus), we have our hands full. Okay, more than full. I don't mind, I love it, and always keep this in mind. With all that's going on, with the unemployment rate as high as it is, I still have a job. One I love, one that challenges me in some ways, and one that's a good fit. Everyone should have my work problems, huh. In Closing I will spend the weekend (FOUR Days, thanks to our CEO giving everyone today off), and work three days on this course until I teach a different one the following week. | Locale: Bloomington, Illinois Well, for the 11th week in a row, I'm home, and will be at least one more week if not more. Work has picked back up for us, we've been busy creating small 5-7 minute videos for students to review prior to a class, and editing our courseware so it can be used in an online delivery. I will be teaching class again this week, and will have now taught three weeks in a row. As summer approaches, we'll get busier, so we've been told. I can believe it, because despite not teaching for half of April, I am scheduled for 36 days of delivery in the second quarter. For a full twelve week quarter, 25 days is considered to be a full schedule. Obviously I'm very lucky, and blessed to have this job I love. And despite all the things we're doing, senior leadership still has to take some hard lines on things. As a result of this virus, our annual incentive bonus is gone for next year (but I still have a job), they have e-mailed long term employees with a Voluntary Separation Program (VSP), and yes, I received that e-mail. But I won't be taking their offer, even if it is a little generous. There is a possibility that in the future we'll have layoffs. While I think I'm relatively safe, you never know. So you might ask why I'm not taking their VSP offer? Because I don't want to retire, plain and simple. We'll see what the future holds, but I still have this job! I often wonder what I'd be doing, or where I'd be, if I had remained at the Firestone Tire Plant during that tire recall of 2000. I don't think I'd be near as happy, that's for sure. Right now, my schedule has me going to Delaware in two weeks, New Mexico (Home!) in three weeks, teaching from home the following two weeks, and the week of July 4th free of delivery. After that, I will be in Washington DC, then teach from home, Washington DC again, then either teach from home, or teach in Chicago. It all depends on what management decides by that time. August finds me in California, with two weeks in Chicago working on a small system to get it set for a delivery the third week (Lagos Nigeria US Embassy technicians). Obviously most of this is 'up-in-the-air' and not firm. I think the Delaware class is really up-in-the-air, and maybe that California class, since that's been delayed 4-5 times already, starting early last year. | Locale: Central Illinois Last week found me home of course, enjoying life in a small 900 Sq. Ft House. Gee, reminds me of life on a submarine. Except I can go out some, feel the weather, and enjoy life. I delivered my first Fleetmapping class as an online class, after spending three weeks working on improving/modifying the course materials. The class went well, with nice feedback received from the students. I've delivered classes online since 2002, but for the most part, mostly one class. This class is a lot different, I really enjoyed delivering it. Of course I didn't tell the students it was my first time delivering it, that would not have been good. I was pleased with my delivery, the comments from the students made it all the better. Right now, I'll be home all of May, and go to Tokyo the first week of June. But, Japan has travel restrictions in place, you cannot travel there if you've been in the US in the last 14 days. My answer is that my boss should send me somewhere for 2 weeks, then send me to Japan! Like that's going to happen. It would be nice to think that this will all go back to how it was sometime in May, but I think it will take a lot longer to get there, IF we ever get there. The world has changed, people have changed, some are acutely aware of how easy a virus can spread. Guess they never watched 'The Stand', did they?  That's about it for now. | Locale: Bloomington, Illnois Well, it's been six weeks since I arrived home from Winnipeg. It's been a bit of an amazing journey too. I guess I could get used to working from home, and I should because we'll be doing more of it. No, travel won't stop entirely, but those who are used to working in Schaumburg need to get more used to it than I do. I don't think we'll ever get back to the way it was before Pandemic. Right now, I will remain at home through May31st. Then, at least as of right now, I will fly to Tokyo for a class, and life will be a bit more normal for me. Most of my current classes are tentative, meaning the customer hasn't committed to the dates, but right now I am scheduled to be in: 1. Week of 6/1 - Tokyo, (already mentioned) 2. Week of 6/15: Kentucky State Police, most likely will be in Frankfort. 3. Week of 7/6: White House Communications Agency 4. Week of 7/20: US Senate Sergeant At Arms 5. Week of 8/17: Western Area Power Administration - Folsom, California I have other classes currently scheduled for Schaumburg that will most likely become online classes. Only time will tell. In Closing I am home through April and May right now, giving me three months at home. I have not been home that long for over 18 years now. Guess I should get used to it. One thing's for sure. | Locale: Bloomington, Illinois This MONTH finds me in Bloomington, Illinois, working from home. After returning home from Winnipeg, my cough got drasatically worse, almost overnight. A quick trip to Prompt Care on a Sunday morning (after a sleepless night of coughing while trying to sleep in the loveseat) took care of me pretty well. A followup trip to my doctor resulted in being referred to a Cardiologist, and an ENT Specialist. I had not seen a Cardiologist since 2009, a year after having a very minor heart attack. People always ask why I call it very minor. There's a couple of reasons really. First, I went to the ER on a Tuesday night (St. Patrick's Day, 2008), and was discharged Thursday afternoon. Secondly, the enzyme (?) (I think it's an enzyme) that the heart makes when you have a heart attack barely went above the limit. If I recall correctly, the limit for this particular 'thing' was 10, mine reached 14. You have to remain in the hospital until it's below 10, mine was there by Wednesday night. Another reason? I did see my Cardiologist a couple of times shortly after the heart attack. He put me through the usual stuff. Stress tests, ultrasound of my heart, etc. They stopped the Stress test when I reached a certain % of the calculated maximum heart rate (I was still going strong on the treadmill), and the Ultrasound that was done with chemicals injected revealed no damage to my heart muscle. A follow up visit a year later resulted in him telling me to watch my diet, and return to see him only if I experienced any chest pain or problems. Since it had been so long since being seen by a Cardiologist, it was time. Another stress test two weeks ago, again passed with no issues at all. Both the Cardiologist and ENT Doctor were interested in my fainting during extreme coughing. The ENT asked me to see him in two weeks, and when I went back, he saw the recent blood tests, and Stress Test results, and said I didn't have an ENT issue, and to see my doctor for any further treatment. It's a relief to know that I'm not deathly sick. At least not by their tests. My doctor thinks I had (may still have if you ask me), an underlying upper respiratory infection, and the trip to Algeria wore me down physically. I got little to no sleep on the return flight, and this minor infection took the chance to attack while I was exhausted. Oh well... like I've said, better now. With the COVID-19 Pandemic, work has changed. We're all working from home, and some of us are working hard to change our curriculum so we can deliver part of our classes online, then have students come to Schaumburg to complete the hands-on activities. Tuesday, my manager asked me if I could deliver a class online called, "Fleeetmapping". (I'm not currently qualified to deliver this class. It's delivered entirely by a contractor). I sat through it last year, and remembered it well. It didn't seem to be a hard class to pick up, but I also remembered that the Powerpoint Slides used in delivery were in horrible shape. I'd have been embarrassed to deliver a class using those slides. No wait, that's not correct. There is NO WAY I'd ever deliver a class using slides that looked that bad. Anyway, I now have three weeks to learn this course, and in the process, have been given permission to edit the course to my hearts content. There are a couple of instructors who are really interested in this class, and they will help me. I spent most of Wednesday thru Friday just cleaning up the formatting of the slides. Next week, the three of us will meet in Adobe Connect to review the content, and make sure there are no errors. In the process, I'll be learning the course, right? The answer is Yes, I've reviewed it once already, now will come an in-depth review, with a check to make sure it's all error free. Then I will go through the Excel Spreadsheet used in the class to make sure I understand that, and I'll be good, ready for the class. I hope we can have that done by Friday. That's my goal. Of course there's more. There's always more, right? Since we're editing our courses and such, I am scheduled to deliver the second of our Networking classes at the end of April. Those course materials are being edited, and since we're adding a new switch (made by Aruba), and a new router (Juniper router) to our systems, I have to learn that part of it too. Getting my new course completed early will allow me to concentrate on the Networking course materials. So my at home time during this pandemic is really allowing me to get quite a bit done. So what am I reading/writing? Boring technical stuff.... Noteworthy Restaurants: Jim's Homemade Cooking. Man, the food here can be great one day, just edible the next. Some days it's something new, others, it tastes like leftovers. Oh wait, that's what it is! The menu is eclectic at best, but at least it's all food I enjoy. In Closing I will spend the rest of March (all three days of it), and probably all of April at home. For someone who is used to traveling a lot, it's like prison! It's not bad at all, it's just different. My next scheduled trip will be to Fort Lauderdale Florida, the first week of May. Unless that becomes an online delivery also. | Locale: Winnipeg, Manitoba This week finds me in Winnipeg, Manitoba for a class with the Government of Manitoba. It was a little bit of a challenge for a couple of reasons. First, the students had very little background in Networking. Y'know, the kind of networking that allows computers to communicate with each other, not networking to gain followers or find someone to follow. Secondly, my health had continued to deteriorate. Don't get me wrong, I was okay really, but my cough was getting out of hand at times. My initial impression of Winnipeg is one of COLD! There was this white stuff on the ground, well it had been white at one time.      I think the lowest temperature I saw while there was about -5 degrees Fahrenheit. A bit colder than I'm used to, even living here in Central Illinois. But, as a result of being in Winnipeg, I've now been in every southern province in Canada!While I was there, an e-mail was sent from Corporate Travel about travel to China, Japan, and other areas hit hard by the CoronaVirus. Travel had to be approved by a Corporate VP before we are allowed to travel. The VP approved it, but left it up to us as to whether we wanted to travel or not. It really hurt me to inform my manager that I didn't feel I should go. I wasn't so concerned about the virus, I figure I can get it here, or there. My biggest fear was that someone would hear me coughing, and I'd end up in quarantine. Then came Saturday, and all doubts about going to Japan were erased. I passed out 3 times in less than 2 hours, one time while sitting on the toilet (No, I hadn't gone yet, so no mess) (TMI, I know), but broke the toilet seat doing so! This convinced me I needed to see a doctor then, and not wait until my scheduled appointment Monday. While he was listening to my lungs, I had to breathe deep. This caused me to cough, and it built quickly. Next thing I knew, my legs were being held in the air while he lowered me gently to the now reclining examination bench. He asked me "Are you okay?" I said I was, but apparently that was the 4th or 5th time he'd asked that question. The odd thing? While I was out, I was dreaming. Noteworthy Restaurants: Sushi Cushi http://sushicushi.ca/menu/ I went there with the Project Manager and the System Manager for the Government of Manitoba Radio System. We ordered enough food for 5 or 6 people, not three! But, it was excellent, all of it. Yummmmm In Closing I will spend the next three weeks at home. My manager has said no travel, no work, no teaching during this time, I'm to relax and get healthier. I have done a couple of things for work, they have to be done before my next classes!
