entry for the daily flash fiction challenge 12/23/2025

“What’s that noise?”

I looked up from my phone. “What noise?”

The loud sound of metal and glass colliding came from the kitchen. The kind of sound that made me not want to look. I got up and went into the kitchen just in time to see Mittens shoving another stack of pans off of the shelf.

“Mittens!”

Of course, her response was just a muted, “Meow?” She darted behind another pot, knocking it off. The next thing I heard was a snarl and an abruptly silenced squeak. She came out of the corner with a mouse limply dangling from her mouth.
My mouth was about to open to yell at her for the mess, but seeing the dead rodent silenced that. “Good Mittens?”

Mittens hopped down from the shelf and sauntered into the living room. The next thing I heard was my wife screeching, “What is that!”

I bent to begin picking up the pots and pans, “Honey, THAT is the noise.”
