Since I am the world's worst speller, and if it didn't involve reading or discussing literature, I probably slept through it during English class, I have a high tolerance for people's mistakes. That being said, there are three items that, when written, bug me:. 1) I never mind if someone corrects a spelling or grammatical error I've made, or that someone else has made. As long as it's done constructively, but sometimes it's done in a belittling manner. Think of yourself as a teacher (that's what we all should be here). Always be constructive and helpful. 2) When people criticize the spelling/usage of a person for whom English is a second language. I can barely speak and write English, and here these people are writing in a nonnative tongue. Again, think teacher, be kind, instructive, and helpful. 3) This one's pretty specific. I was doing a Supervisory Observation of a student teacher in an English class. On the Cooperating teacher's desk was one of those funny little signs you buy in a gift shop. It said, "I Am Silently Correcting Your Grammar". Really? You Are A FREAKING English Instructor. If I make mistakes, help me fix them; correcting them silently is a disservice to everyone. : |
