Twenty-five years ago I was working with teenagers who had been excluded from school. That was the nice way of putting it - they'd been expelled. Most of them had not attended school for at least a year beforehand (which was the reason for exclusion - it took the schools that long to notice they weren't there and to cope with the subsequent adjustment to their funding). As a result, they were all pretty wild and uneducated wonders and my job was somehow to get them to the point of being employable and able to stay out of jail. It was exhausting but rewarding (although not monetarily).
