Along the gloomy shore of the River Styx,
where the dead go to cross on Halloween,
Jack O'Lantern waits to greet the unhappy souls
with something to lift their spirits.
The joint starts jumping
when he rises from the patch,
and starts to shimmy and shake on the vine,
while crooning,
"Hey, Mambo, Mambo Italiano!
You worked hard for your money,
now it's quitting time,
so put on your happy feet
and gimme some shake, Goombah!"

Fire heats cauldron; witch brews potion
with rats, bats, and lizards, producing phantom cloud of spirits.
Ghastly cackle spells doom for unsuspecting victims, as shadow of death crosses their path.

Fireflies flicker in the night
and blend with distant stars
in blackened universe bound
by transcendental powers
beyond the realm of intellect.
Notes on the mGur form of poetry ▼
mGur, (poetic song), from Tibet is yodic verse (union of the self with the supreme-being). I couldn't find much in the way of its history though it dates back to the 13th century. From what I could find, the form uses metaphor and parallels. The mGur is more a genre of poetry meant as an extension of or resulting from meditation or prayer. Syllable count and number of lines are just general guides to enhance rhythm and flow. It is Buddhistic in nature and often "songs of positive personal experience", many express "joy at having overcome an obstacle [or] hopes for future success" Roger Jackson -Tibetan Literature: Studies in Genre, pp.368-392
The elements of the mGur are:
syllabic, lines are 7 syllables, sometimes more.
most commonly written in 5 lines. A pentastich. The mGur can extend to 8 lines.
a vehicle for meditation. Content should result from or be an extension of meditation or prayer.
often employs metaphor and or parallelism.
Singed Wings by Judi Van Gorder
Flame flickers behind the veil,
changes red to blue and back,
transparent wings, a white moth
flutters in and through small light
to dare touch the living fire.

Back to school we go again--
reading, writing, 'rithmatic,
football games on Friday nights,
teeny bopper sock hops, and
active shooter drills.
Poet's notes ▼
1. The Dodoitsu is an ancient form of Japanese poetry, as described in the following link: https://thanetwriters.com/essay/form/what-is-a-dodoitsu/
2. Although the form is frequently applied to amuse by capturing a humorous moment through vivid imagery, I choose to present a different slice of contemporary life. In my day, we hunkered beneath our desks during nuclear attack drills. Today, the threat is active shooters.

Sun rises, sun sets, tide comes in, and tide goes out.
Dolphins dance in surf and chase my worries away
while living on island time. |

The smell of coffee, orange marmalade sunrise, and the meadowlark's song imbue my heart with happiness. |

Stoically stalking,
Reaper roams banks of the Styx
with ax to spread woe.
Character in crape
cunningly creeping across
to cook his éclair
from frothing phobia
and fractious fingers of fear--
fee-fi-fo-fum. Yum!
Traipsing through the trees
to a tryst with victims lured
into his trusty traps.
Leave no doubt. There'll be
unalleviated grieving
on All Hallows Eve. |
