I'm the lead editor for a small independent press, but I am on maternity leave for the next several years and thus not accepting submissions. I'll tell you my professional opinion on first chapters or short pieces and whether I would have accepted it or rejected it if I was looking for work. I've dealt most with controversial speculative fiction, and I'm most interested in polyamory a.k.a consensual non-monogamy.

Money is the root of all evil. Personally, I'd like to take the money out of politics by turning elections into a reality TV show. All candidates have to prove their willingness to be a public servant by interacting with the people they will serve, essentially doing volunteer work for a year while we all watch how they behave. Registered voters will vote them "off the island" until we are left with the most kindhearted, qualified leader.

I also plan to homeschool, but for different reasons. Due to large class sizes, teachers often resort to bribery to convince kids to learn. This helps in the short run, but in the long run, it ruins their intrinsic enjoyment of learning. Children are naturally curious, and they don't need to be bribed to learn. The same goes for chores. Helping your family and seeing the smiles on their faces is the only reward needed. While growing up, I was given a weekly allowance regardless of how many chores I did.

The only time my parents paid me to do something was after we got a new roof, and the workers left lots of nails in the yard. They wanted the nails picked up quickly so nobody would get hurt. They paid me five cents for every small nail and ten cents for every large nail I found.

There are many ways to be a helper even when your body fails you, especially with the aid of technology. One good thing that came out of the pandemic is that more companies are willing to hire remote workers, and it's about time! Remote work allows people spend less time in cars and more time with their families.

If you're a nurturing person, you can use Zoom or other internet video services to be a mentor, counselor, or perhaps even a private tutor if you have expertise in a particular subject.
