I'm the lead editor for a small independent press, but I am on maternity leave for the next several years and thus not accepting submissions. I'll tell you my professional opinion on first chapters or short pieces and whether I would have accepted it or rejected it if I was looking for work. I've dealt most with controversial speculative fiction, and I'm most interested in polyamory a.k.a consensual non-monogamy.

This is something most people over the age of ten know. Repeating simplistic messages such as this is not helpful.

What we need are more tips on HOW to eat fewer calories and exercise more. How does a person with a slow metabolism resist the urge to eat socially when they are hanging out with friends who want junk food? How can you convince your friends to take a walk when they want to binge watch Netflix? How do you start riding your bicycle to work when motorists in your community are obnoxiously rude and sometimes even dangerous towards cyclists?

This is refreshing to hear. When I was first entering the job market as a Millennial, Boomers tried to gaslight us into thinking that a high job turnover rate was a good thing. Really, it was the result of toxic workplaces and a ploy to keep our wages low and to keep us desperately searching for our next job while we tried to make ends meet.

I minored in psychology, and I have a few words of advice. Don't be afraid to show weakness. Vulnerability brings people closer together. Keeping your feelings bottled up and doing things you don't feel are right creates cognitive dissonance. Drinking is a method of self-medication that many people turn to in order to silence cognitive dissonance rather than unraveling the root causes.

I'm also struck by the focus on trying to make the relationship exclusive. Monogamy is not necessary for commitment, but if that's your goal, it's important to make that clear. Personally, I'm polyamorous, and I've made that clear to everyone I've been intimate with since I learned the word. I grew up thinking that monogamy was my only option, but that changed in 2008 when my boyfriend at the time asked me some questions that opened my world. In 2009, I started actively looking for non-monogamous relationships. I don't recall exactly when I learned the word polyamory, but I quickly realized that's what I wanted all along. I got married in 2018 to someone who started out as a friend with benefits in 2010, and my boyfriend (whom I met in 2016) attended the wedding with a date.

My purpose in telling you this is not to convince you to try polyamory but to encourage you to open that conversation with people who interest you before you get in too deep. Monogamy is a great relationship model for many people. It's just not for everyone. Destigmatizing polyamory will make life better for monogamous people because it will allow everyone to be honest about the relationship style they want before people commit to a relationship.

This reminds me a lot of my ex-boyfriend. Towards the end, the demons surfaced and I tried to help him fight them, but I knew so little about them because he had hidden them from me all the time we had been together. I later learned that he let the demons out to play every time I went to visit my parents.
