I'm the lead editor for a small independent press, but I am on maternity leave for the next several years and thus not accepting submissions. I'll tell you my professional opinion on first chapters or short pieces and whether I would have accepted it or rejected it if I was looking for work. I've dealt most with controversial speculative fiction, and I'm most interested in polyamory a.k.a consensual non-monogamy.

Indeed, I have noticed a lot of people dwell on their dissatisfaction. There will always be things to be unsatisfied about but also things to take joy in. The trick is to practice gratitude every day to train our minds towards satisfaction. Religions are very good at convincing humans to be satisfied, but too much satisfaction means we'd have no reason to satisfy our curiosity and we would stagnate.

Thanks for requesting my review!

This piece has a mellow, meandering tone.

If this came to my press as a submission, I would either have to have a complete book of short stories from you or be in the process of collecting stories for an anthology with a specific theme. I like it, but I'd have to see a bigger picture to know if it was a good fit for my press.

It is very relatable. I find myself thinking of similar figures in my childhood, of a boy I would run around with at company Christmas parties. I didn't see him much outside of that, but there was one time when our parents took us to a park with pecan trees and collected all the pecans we could find. He had a common first name, and after we moved, I always had a favorable opinion of people with his name, though I never dated someone with his name.
